nvidia optimizations and another depth buffer question.

Post by AnarchoCapitalist »

I could swear that nvidia's depth buffer quality is worse (looks like some kind of z-range hack was done or are using some kind of lossy compression) in all the drivers compatible with 660Ti compared to R275 (which was the last I used with the GTX 560 Ti that I sold).

I don't see how they could keep having performance gains without at least a few subtle decreases in image quality.

Has anyone else noticed it?

2. How does AMD have 100% lossless z-compression if they use a 2:1 minimum compression ratio?

3. Are color and depth buffer compression the same ratio with SGSSAA compared to MSAA? If not, then what are the differences?

I saw your thread on GeForce forums. No matter what you need to attach comparision screenshots. The more the better. Otherwise they won't be able to help you.

If you no longer have the card, borrow it from somebody. It's probably not just 560 GTX, any other 5xx should also do the job.

You're quite smart: )

Anyway, I'll try to keep my mouth closed on the issue until I get screenshots. And thank you for the advice, as I had wondered why they weren't replying. But I do have some questions remaining if you don't mind... what are some options available to driver developers that could be used to subtly reduce depth buffer quality? Do driver optimizations usually decrease image quality subtly?

I don't mean to be annoying, but I was wondering if Zeus (or someone else) could answer my questions. I can understand if Zeus can't or won't because I'm sure they'd have a good reason (Zeus is one very reasonable moderator and programmer, must be an INTP), but I'm really curious.

Anyway, I really miss the w-buffer (Rayman 3's bonus levels don't look as amazing on the Geforce 6 and later and Enter the Matrix was the same way) and I've never understand why none of the DX9.0s didn't require a full precision z-buffer.

Is there anywhere I can ask other than the geforce forums, Anandtech, here, or Beyond 3D?
