Boss Rally - suggestion to add to Compatibility page

Post by IceMan »

With Boss Rally (which can be a pain as some virus checkers (e.g. AVG) will find parts of it to be false positives), once you've got the game installed, running it on modern PCs may just show an error that it's unable to launch EAR. This is a surround sound driver that the game uses (the installer for which is called iasinst.exe on the CD-ROM, but again, virus checkers think it's dodgy, so needs allowing + Win95 compatibility to install, then STILL won't work).

ANYWAY there's a very easy workaround to fix the sound, which also enables music in the game (which doesn't play on WinXP either, so this fix may work there too!). Basically once you've chosen your graphics driver using SetVideo.exe (i.e. Voodoo2 with Glide (via a wrapper)), then open BossRally.ini and add the line PlayMusic=1, which will play the music using Windows MCI, which still works with Windows8.1, and gets around the error! There's other lines you can add, have a look in the game's ReadMe.txt, and enjoy!
My PC spec: Win10 64bit, i7-4970K (not overclocked) MSI Nvidia GeForce GTX 980, Creative Soundblaster ZX, 16GB RAM, Asus Z98-A motherboard, ROG Swift GSYNC monitor

Big tnx.
This game was in my "M$ have killed our winmm.dll and cd-audio in WinXp" list. I'm happy this is the false positive.

1) Install nGlide (if you didn't yet)
2) Open SetVideo.exe from your game folder, click Next and choose "I know the chipset of my 3D video card".
Then choose "3Dfx Voodoo [use Glide]" from the list. Click Finish.

From now on the game will be using nGlide.
