NBA Live 2000 troubleshooting

Postby marianoryu » Fri Feb 12, 2016 3:20 pm

Greetings, and please forgive the intrusion. I'm new to this and can't yet entirely figure out what I'm doing.

I'm trying to run NBA Live 2000, but have a bit of trouble in doing so. I installed the patch included in the compatibility guide gallery, and got it to start with the 3dfx sign.

Firstly, I'm unable to change in-game resolution beyond 856 x 480, as well as texture quality beyond "med". The game is also running slow when trying to play a regular 5-on-5 game.

I'm getting the same problem in two different computers. One is a laptop running Windows 10 32-bit (which is how I got it to install), using the latest nGlide (1.05 according to the download section).

The other is a desktop, also on Windows 10 64-bit, which is why I'm using a Windows XP image in VmWare Player. In this one, my graphics card is a Radeon HD 6450.

I hope I've given enough information, otherwise I have no problem in answering any questions. I'm sorry for the trouble and appreciate any help in advance.

Maximum texture size is limited for all Glide games. So - "Med" is the best option for nGlide and a real hardware.
Have tested, nGlide 1.05 works ok in 1280x1024+medium texture size+triple buffering. (Can't test 1600x1200, sorry. But it is selectable, not grayed.) Nglide 1.04 was limited to 1024x768 with these detail options (1280x1024 w/o triple buffering).

It looks like you use voodooz.dll (glide2x renderer), not voodoo2z.dll (glide3x.renderer). It was limited to 640x480, 800x600 and 856x480 resolutions in nGlide (my Voodoo2 SLI have 6 resolutions in this renderer: 960x720 and 2 (?) 1024x768 are added).
Please check the "HKLM\Software\EA Sports\NBA 2000\Thrash Driver" key value. It must be "voodoo2".

P.S. Have checked the nbalive2000.reg file from the site compatibility list. Yes, glide2x renderer is forced. Edit this .reg (replace "Thrash driver"="voodoo" to "Thrash Driver"="voodoo2"), run the edited .reg then play.
Asus P4P800 SE/Pentium4 3.2E/2 Gb DDR400 (3-3-3-8),
Radeon HD3850 Agp (Sapphire), Catalyst 14.4 (XpProSp3).
2 Voodoo2 12 MB (SLI), Win2k drivers 1.02.00 (XpProSp3).

Be advised, I'm trying this on a single computer at the moment (Windows 10 32-bit laptop), as they're in two different locations.

I edited the .reg file to look as follows:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\EA Sports\NBA Live 2000]
"3D Device Description"="3Dfx Voodoo"
"3D Card"="3Dfx Voodoo"
"Thrash Driver"="voodoo2"
"Group"="3Dfx"
"D3D Device"=dword:00000000
"Triple Buffer"=dword:00000000
"Hardware Acceleration"=dword:00000001
"Thrash Resolution"="640x480"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\EA Sports\NBA Live 2000]
"3D Device Description"="3Dfx Voodoo"
"3D Card"="3Dfx Voodoo"
"Thrash Driver"="voodoo2"
"Group"="3Dfx"
"D3D Device"=dword:00000000
"Triple Buffer"=dword:00000000
"Hardware Acceleration"=dword:00000001
"Thrash Resolution"="640x480"

Unfortunately, after editing, running it and starting the game, there seem to be no changes.

WtF?
Maybe Win10Shit have the registry somewhere else...

Have tested again. Found another problem with nGlide - it resets the game resolution to 640x480 at start (Voodoo2 SLI is ok of course). But the resolutions list and the resolution change are ok... 640x480 up to 1600x1200.

I still seem to be getting no changes in my laptop, but then again, I don't fully trust it.

I'll try in my VmWare in a few hours and check back with the results.

No, as Dan Poier would say, still no good.

It must be something I'm doing wrong, but I can't figure out what.

I also can't force voodoo2 thrash through registry (even on XP).

Nothing changed, keys are in the same place.

Luckily there's another solution:
Open \3rash folder and rename voodooz.dll to voodooz_.dll and voodoo2z.dll to voodooz.dll.

Okay - now the resolution options are available in-game. :D

The game, however, is still slow.

These are my specs in the computer I'm at:

Processor: Intel Core i5-2310 2.90 Ghz
6 GB RAM
GPU: AMD RADEON HD 6450 Catalyst 15201.1151.1008.151104a-296217E
Windows 10 Pro 10 build 10586

VmWare Player running Windows XP Pro, nGlide 1.0.5.

Maybe it's related to that?

Well, download and install nGlide 1.04 and try the game (w/o voodooz/voodoo2z renaming) with this version.
It's the first time I hear about this trouble in WinXp... And the game works ok for me. Both nGlide 1.04 and 1.05.

With nGlide 1.0.4, my game resolution is available only up to 1024x768. I'm not entirely concerned about the resolution as I'll most likely play in that, but at the game running slow. No matter what detail settings I choose, no matter what nGlide version I use.
