How to run Redguard demo?

Postby prempink » Sun Apr 26, 2015 5:22 pm

I have Redguard demo installed and downloaded the custom DOS box and unzipped.

But how to run the game, can you give detailed instruction like step by step?

1) Install the demo in windows
2) Copy redguard folder to c:\games
3) Download and extract Ykhwong's DOSBox build (download .7z (save file as..) from DOSBox SVN builds category and extract it somewhere)
4) Open dosbox.conf from DOSBox folder and add:

mount c c:\games

to [autoexec] section.

Set fullscreen=true in [sdl] section and memsize=63 in [dosbox] section.
Save the file.

5) Install nGlide (if it's not installed)
6) Launch dosbox.exe
7) Type "cd redguard\sound" (without quotes) in DOSBox console. Type "setsound". Set Sound Blaster both for MIDI and digital driver. Exit sound setup.
8) Type "cd..". Type "rgfx".

In dosbox.conf set output=opengl and voodoo=opengl

Does the game use glide2x.ovl ? (must be in the game directory)

if no, set glide=emu (the game talks directly to the voodoo card)

If yes, then you have to copy the right .ovl to the directory where the game.exe is.

glide_emu.ovl when glide=emu
glide.ovl when glide=true

Ps: i don't tested that demo, maybe i play around with it after work..

Err, how emulation is supposed to be faster than wrappers?

I think dosbox has some kind of wrapper build in?

It can use a glide2x.dll (nglide, dgvoodoo or real voodoo(2) card.

Or it can use openGL for rendering 3DFX.

The Yhkwong build ("Daum") includes both emulation and wrapper, and that conf file setting allows you to choose between both.

the "emu" setting makes it use an actual Voodoo emulation, not a wrapper, as far as I know. Performance should be lower.

Yes performance is low.

But youn increase it with settings:

output=opengl (if not set to opengl, then it uses software rendering which is really slow...)
voodoo=opengl
glide=emu

(then you have to copy glide2x_emu.ovl from dosbox to Game-directory.
And rename it to glide2x.ovl )

This uses internal Voodoo emulation (you should see the old 3dfx logo)

----------------------

If you want to use nglide:
then set glide=true
and copy glide2x.ovl (not emu.ovl) to game directory.

you should see the newer 3dfx logo and it runs in fullscreen
