Thrust Twist and Turn - Glide only fails me

Postby IceMan » Wed Jan 21, 2015 12:27 am

Odd results with Thrust Twist + Turn (updated to 1.1) and nGlide; if I start the game with no compatibility only Glide mode shows in the game's config menu, however when you start the game it crashes to Desktop (or freezes with a black screen) after the 3Dfx logo has played (when the video should begin).

If I run it with Win95 compatibility (as you suggest), then the game config menu also shows Primary16bit and Primary24bit. Both of these then work (as long as for 16bit you set that mode against the executable in compatibility settings). However Glide again crashes.

I tried dgVoodoo and that starts the game, but that crashes too A LOT before the game, or even in the menu (I'm loosely wondering if this is related to the same bug that plagues a bunch of older Direct3D games like NFS Hot Pursuit 2 and Supercar Street Challenge on my PC, which crash randomly, if they start at all - however Glide games are usually fine).

I tried various (dgVoodoo and hacked higher framerate DDRAW.dll) to improve Direct3D but neither did much useful.

Here's some samples from the Event Viewer:

try 1 = Win95 compat:

try 2 = no compatibility:
Locked up with black screen after 3Dfx logo

try 3+4 = no compatibilty:
Worked fine (first time ever in nGlide)!

try 5 = no compatibility:

Code: Select all

Faulting application name: ttt.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x3746e294

So perhaps it is my mystery crash that's causing this... very strange. I've seen crashes in ntdll.dll before too. Although tellingly, when you load the game with Win95 compatibility/Direct3D and try to choose different controller then in crashes, this time with:

Code: Select all

Faulting application name: ttt.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x3746e294
Faulting module name: AcGenral.DLL, version: 6.3.9600.17415, time stamp: 0x54503f96

Wish I could understand these random crashes better. They only seem to affect late 90s-early 2000s titles, and not many of them...

p.s. cool tip, launch the ttt.exe with command line -d (e.g. D:\Games\ttt\ttt.exe -d) to enable Debug mode. Now the F keys do all sorts of funky things. Most importantly from a gameplay perspective, press F9 at the start of each race and the ENTIRE TRACK will be rendered, not just the immediate distance. For the tracks set in mid air, this is impressive to see...

even more odd, just switched back to Win95 and now the game seems to work more often than not!

TT+T runs with the 1 ACT fix - Win98VersionLie. Full compatibility modes aren't needed.
Tested with WinXpSp3 and VistaSp2 64-bit.
P.S. No Primary24bit in Vista, 3dfx Voodoo glide 2.45 and Primary16bit only. So it looks like the game needs 1 more ACT fix in Vista...
P.S.S. Ok, the game needs HideDisplayModes too. I have attached the .sdb.

So - use this .sdb as the basis and try standard solutions for "freezes after the 3dfx logo" - EmulateDirectDrawSync, SingleProcAffinity etc. And yes, Win8 compatibility sucks. And Win8 itself... well, you got the idea.

Thanks for this, but I'm getting Direct3D AND Glide crashing now, with or without that sdb. I think this one may end up in the pile of late 90s/early 2000s games that crash randomly (or at certain points) often, but then sometimes work too.

Gotta debug em all later on methinks. Things like Supercar Street Challenge, NFS Hot Pursuit 2 and Porsche, all sorts. Just crash ntdll.dll or another part of Windows. Other people don't get the same as me, so there's *something* going on. I may yet do a fresh install of 8.1 on another hard drive and try some of the games in that, to rule out whether it's something up with my install, or my hardware.

I'll get there in the end!

This, like NFS Porsche, was caused by the USB cable on my H100i cooler being attached. I *think* it's all better now... touch wood!
