Well, I checked my own cd of "War Gods" - the game worked perfectly in Xp.
P4 3GHz, 2Gb RAM, ATi X850 PE AGP, XpSp3, Dx 9.0c, Catalyst 7.11.
Later I try this game with my second PC - Win7, Pherom, ATi HD 5xxx, but I'm sure the results will be same.

Did you try to lower the video acceleration level?

Looks like version 1.1 have the troubles even in d3d mode. No texturing at all. More research is needed... D3d 1.1 have the similar troubles - all textures are black. No, the game is almost perfect for me with nGlide 0.95.
The only artifact is - flickering in menus, but d3d version also have it.

P.S. the information above is for version 1.0. With 1.1 patch I have the same errors as KoRner. Must be something with the new settings.exe util...

To force glide - run the game with "porsche.exe driver=voodoo2" command. Edit the 3dsetup.ini - all 3dfx videocards except voodoo1 and rush have /M:dx string included, so - D3d will be used by default. Replace it to /M:voodoo2 to force glide as the default renderer. P.S. 1st - as mentioned in the patch readme, 3dfx support in the original release is broken for any resolution except 640x400. Tested. Looks like the cause of the crashes is the sound engine.
Lowering of the sound acceleration in Xp cured the loading screen CTDs in Heretic II version 1.00 for me. In the 1.06 you can choose the sound provider and this trouble is not appearing.

Yes, "not 100% compatible with DX9" is too strong, but the "new drivers have critical error with many DX9 applications" is better.
